
The fighting engine feels fresh, yet familiar-what you'd want when reviving an old series. Strikes are weighty, which gives combos an added layer of viciousness. The result is a fighting game that's accessible to newcomers, but packs enough flexibility and technique to satisfy core players. The new Killer Instinct keeps most of the franchise's core gameplay elements, but adds several new mechanics to the hard-hitting combat that feel so, so good when you land blows. Auto-combos, double life bars, and the series' trademark Combo Breakers all helped set Killer Instinct apart from the stiff competition at the time.

Although clearly inspired by other classic fighting games of the era like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct brought its own flavor to the genre as well. Killer Instinct originally debuted in arcades and on the Super Nintendo back in 1994. Mostly, Killer Instinct's an incredibly fun way to mix it up with your buds, even if it feels incomplete in some areas. Sporting a novel (for fighting games, anyway) limited free-to-play and season-pass structure, Killer Instinct is a one-on-one fighter that developer Double Helix plans to continually improve with new characters, accessories, and gameplay tweaks. Killer Instinct isn't a title that many gamers expected to highlight the Xbox One's ($105.00 at eBay) November 2013 launch, but the fighting game is one of the few bright spots in Microsoft's next-generation lineup.

I heard that Killer Instinct has been successful for Microsoft, but perhaps not at the level they wanted it to be.

The game received continuous updates, new modes, new characters, and piles of cosmetics, eventually boasting 10 million players. Microsoft acquired the IP when it bought Rare in the early 2000s, but it wasn't until 2013 that the franchise re-emerged, built by Double Helix, and later Iron Galaxy.
